KOLKATA: Gustavo dos Santos scored in the fourth minute of added time as 10-man Delhi Dynamos got the better of Atletico de Kolkata 1-0 in the Hero Indian Super League clash at Salt Lake Stadium here on Thursday.
Atletico de Kolkata believed they had the upperhand when they were handed a numerical advantage for the last ten minutes of the match.
Delhi Dynamos defender Souvik Chakraborty, previously booked, was issued the marching orders in the 80th minute for a foul on Jaime Gaivilan. It was his second booking of the match but the hosts could not pounce on the numerical advantage for the rest of the match.
It were Delhi Dynamos who had the last laugh at the death. In the fourth minute of added time, Florent Malouda worked his magic inside the danger zone, kept his composure even though several defenders crowded him and then laid the ball for Dos Santos, who coolly slammed the ball inside the goal.
The end was dramatic but even with a player down, Delhi had created another goal-scoring opportunity and came closest to breaking the deadlock in the closing stages of the match. A cut back from Gustavo Dos Santos from the right was turned powerfully by Malouda but Atletico de Kolkata defender Arnab Mondal put his body on the line to avert the danger.
Kolkata will be disappointed with the result. They have now lost three matches in a row but the defending champions have themselves to blame for not making their home advantage count.
They did not create too many chances either and the only chance in the first session was in the 37th minute when a freekick from Gaivilan needed only a touch but Baljit Sahni turned wide from close range.
For Delhi Dynamos, Malouda was the most dangerous player. He saw an early header miss the target narrowly and in the 39th minute, he cut past Augustin Fernandes and crossed inside the box where Robin Singh’s header sailed wide.
The second half was a repeat of the first with both teams guarded in their approach. The 80th minute sending off of Souvik appeared to turn the match in Kolkata’s favour, until Gustavo dos Santos snatched full points from right under Kolkata’s nose.
The win meant Delhi Dynamos are now level on points (12) with leaders FC Pune City but are placed second due to goal difference. Atletico de Kolkata have seven points and are placed sixth.
