PUNE: Mumbai City FC will have to do without their top goalkeeper as they take on the might FC Pune City in the Maha Derby in Pune on Monday.
Goalkeeper Subrata Paul has been summoned for national duty and the India No. 1 will miss the first three games for Mumbai City in the Indian Super League. That leaves player-cum-coach Nicolas Anelka with a selection headache right at the start as Mumbai is the only franchise without a foreign goalkeeper.
Anelka will now have to choose between Debjit Majumder, who excelled for Mohun Bagan in the I-League title-triumph and young Salgaocar FC goalkeeper Albino Gomes.
Apart from the selection conundrum, Anelka will have nothing much to worry as the Mumbai franchise has improved considerably from last season with a host of impressive signings.
“I think the strength of Mumbai this season will be the number of good players we have,” said Anelka, who will miss out on the services of his strike partner Sunil Chhetri, also on national duty.
Anelka will lead Mumbai City from the front and will be helped by the likes of Brazilian Andre Moritz and Sony Norde, the Haitian midfielder who impressed for Mohun Bagan last season and is now a known figure in Indian football.
Anelka can expect a fierce challenge from his rivals which will have former Chelsea teammate Adrian Mutu spearheading the attack. The former Romanian striker is just one among several leading players that FC Pune City have roped in to improve on last year’s performance when they failed to qualify for the knockout stage.
Pune City coach David Platt, formerly with Manchester City as assistant to Roberto Mancini, has put together a competitive squad but the lack of friendly matches in pre-season could cause them some discomfort. They played just one friendly against East Bengal, and although they won 3-1, Platt would not have had much time to iron out the flaws.
Besides Mutu, others to watch out for at Pune City includes Ivory Coast’s most-capped player Didier Zokora, Turkish star Tuncay Sanli and
former Cardiff City and West Ham United central defender Roger Johnson.
Pune will miss India stars Eugeneson Lyngdoh, Jackichand Singh and Pritam Kotal.

FC Pune City coasted comfortable 3-1 victory over Mumbai City FC
PUNE: Israil Gurung was the hero for FC Pune City as they coasted to a comfortable 3-1 victory over Mumbai City FC in their opening Indian Super League (ISL) clash in Pune on Monday.
Israil set-up the first two goals for Turkish international Tuncay Sanli to score and then scored himself to kick-start Pune’s title charge.
The teams were tied 1-1 at the change of ends but Pune turned the heat on their rivals in the second session with Tuncay and Israil combining to give the team the lead in the 56th minute and then Israil scored a goal of his own in the 68th minute to kill the match as a contest.
Mumbai City FC scored their only goal through Frederic Piquionne in the 34th minute.
Mumbai were tentative at the start but with such an array of attacking talent they were always certain to stamp their class. However, much against the run of play, Pune surged ahead, thanks to a measured pass from Israil which Tuncay sneaked from behind the Mumbai defence and headed home from close range in the 12th minute.
Mumbai had to wait till after the half an hour mark to restore parity. The visitors had gone agonisingly close with Sony Norde’s shot coming off the goalpost but they were celebrating again as a perfect ball from Ashutosh Mehta saw Piquionne beat a non-existent offside trap and head past the goalkeeper.
In the second session, the match was turned on its head by Pune City.
Pune surged ahead for the second time in the 56th minute. It was Israil again on the right who crossed in the heart of the goalmouth and past several defenders, Tuncay came up with a diving header.
Mumbai were still in the game but Israil sealed all escape routes in the 68th minute. It was a fortunate goal as Adrian Mutu, introduced in the second half, found Israil on the right and his intended cross struck the outstretched leg of marker and sailed past Mumbai’s young goalkeeper Albino Gomes.
Mumbai City marquee player-cum-manager Nicolas Anelka introduced himself in the 75th minute but the visitors had left themselves with a mountain to climb in the last fifteen minutes.
