MUMBAI: Atletico de Kolkata instilled life in their Hero Indian Super League campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Mumbai City FC in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.
Atletico de Kolkata had lost three consecutive matches and could have been left behind in the race for a place in the semifinal. But, under pressure, Canadian striker Iain Hume won the match for the visitors with a hat-trick, finally scoring for his new club.
Defender Augustine Fernandes scored a rare goal for Kolkata after Mumbai City FC had pulled a goal back through Selim Benachour.
The winners led 2-0 at the interval with Hume scoring both the goals.
The opening goal came in the 34th minute from a quick counter-attack. Jaime Gaivilan sent an overhead ball for Hume, who surprised everyone with an instinctive half-volley that momentarily wrong-footed Mumbai City goalkeeper Subrata Paul and found its way inside the goal.
The goal gave renewed confidence to Kolkata but Mumbai City have won three matches in a row at the same venue and were not about to give it up in a hurry. With marquee player Nicolas Anelka featuring in the starting eleven for the first time, there was always an element of danger in their attacks but the hosts ended up conceding another goal at the stroke of half time.
Subhash Singh was the guilty player who tracked back and carelessly brought down Gaivilan inside the box, leaving the referee with no choice but award the penalty. Hume stepped up and converted the spot-kick to give his team a 2-0 lead going into the breather.
In the second session, nothing that Mumbai City tried worked but they were handed a lifeline in the 71st minute when Benachour pulled a goal back. Benachour was at the right place at the right time after Sunil Chhetri's shot was blocked by goalkeeper Amrinder Singh, who had stunningly saved Fred Piquionne’s attempt from close range in the 61st minute.
The goal did not alter equations as Kolkata restored their two-goal lead five minutes later. Augustin moved up and exchanged a quick one-two with Sameehg Doutie just outside the box and then kept his cool to finish the move with a low grounder.
This was now surely going to be Kolkata's night and Hume was at the heart of it all. The Canadian striker registered his hat-trick in the 81st minute after Javi Lara and Doutie had done the spadework.
Mumbai City eventually had 18 corners throughout the 90 minutes of play but Kolkata were more clinical in front of goal and walked away with full points. They now have 10 points, the same as Mumbai City and Chennaiyin FC but jumped to fifth position in the points table while Mumbai City have slipped one rank with today’s defeat to be in 6th place.
