CHENNAI: NorthEast United FC continued their dream run in the Hero Indian Super League with a 2-1 comeback win over Chennaiyin FC in a ninth round clash in Chennai on Wednesday.
In a dramatic match which was interrupted by heavy rain and lightning for 45 minutes, Chennaiyin FC took the lead through Elano Blumer (33rd minute) but NorthEast secured all points through goals from Diomansy Kamara (44th minute) and substitute Silas (72nd minute).
The win was NorthEast United’s second consecutive away victory and helped them do the double over Chennaiyin FC, who they had defeated at home in a fiery encounter. NorthEast United have also done the double over defending champions Atletico de Kolkata this season.
NorthEast United now have 13 points in their bag, significantly just two less than league leaders FC Goa. Chennaiyin FC have 10 points from nine matches.
After suffering reverses in two games, including a lucky draw against Kerala Blasters, Chennaiyin FC were not surprisingly eager to get their campaign back on track and hit the ground running.
Colombian striker Stiven Mendoza was a dangerous customer but most of the probing was being done by Elano. The Chennaiyin FC marquee player had his first attempt on goal in the 13th minute when, provided with space just outside the box, he took a shot at goal which goalkeeper TP Rehenesh dived smartly to save.
Rehenesh was kept busy throughout the game and was beaten just once in the 33rd minute. Not surprisingly, the goal came from the boots of Elano who captialized on a weak header from Carlos Lopez with a half-volley.
The goal disrupted NorthEast United momentarily but fortunately for the visitors, they were able to calm nerves quickly. Three minutes after going down, NorthEast made their intentions known as Seityasen Singh, seeing goalkeeper Edel Bete off his line, tried his luck with a long ranger that dipped on to the roof of the net.
It was not until the 44th minute that NorthEast got the equalizer. A long ball over the defence saw Diomansy Kamara head towards goal where Edel Bete made a diving save but nobody was on hand to block Kamara a second time and he made no mistake from such a close range.
Chennaiyin FC were always going to be dangerous and NorthEast had to battle a wave of attacks. Goalkeeper Rehenesh was the busiest on the field and did well to keep away smart attempts from Mendoza and Co.
The goalkeeper was called again into action just after the hour mark when Elano tried to catch him off-guard with a free-kick but the goalkeeper was alert to the danger.
The goalkeeper, later adjudged Hero of the match, made his best save in the 65th minute when Raphael Augusto’s shot from distance appeared destined for goal only for the NorthEast custodian to tip it over the bar.
NorthEast United took the lead much against the run of play. Kamara was at the heart of the move in the 72nd minute as he played a ball inside the danger zone where Silas, who was introduced just a minute ago, trapped cleanly, beat his marker and then picked the top corner of the net to put his team ahead.
The goal hit Chennaiyin FC hard and despite two attacking substitutions from Marco Materazzi, the hosts could not save themselves a second defeat in a row at home.
